Acrylics, polycarbonates and clear vinyl surfaces require special care. They are easily damaged by the environment and particularly vulnerable to common cleaners, harsh polishes and ammonia-based glass products. The most frequent problems we see are mold and mildew, yellowing, scratches, hazing and crazing or cracking.
YSR has deep experience restoring, protecting and maintaining these surfaces. Using proven products and techniques we return acrylic and plexiglass to a like-new condition — then protect them with UV and hydrophobic coatings so they stay that way.
What's included
- Strataglass and Isinglass restoration
- Acrylic and polycarbonate window polishing
- Corian surface restoration
- Mildew, scratch and crazing remediation
- Yellowing and oxidation removal
- UV and hydrophobic protective coatings
Strataglass and Isinglass — why they fail so fast
Strataglass and Isinglass are clear vinyl enclosures used on flybridges, hardtops and helm enclosures. They are remarkably clear when new — and remarkably easy to ruin with the wrong product. Ammonia-based glass cleaners, alcohol-based wipes, paper towels and abrasive cloths all cause hazing, micro-scratching and accelerated yellowing.
YSR uses the manufacturer-approved IMAR cleaner and protectant system, plus dedicated polishing systems for established scratches and surface hazing. Done right, a tired enclosure can recover 80–95% of original clarity without replacement — saving thousands of dollars per yacht.
Acrylic and polycarbonate windows
Cabin windows, helm windows and salon glazing are increasingly made from acrylic and polycarbonate rather than tempered glass. These plastics scratch easily, craze under UV and chemical stress, and turn yellow when exposed to harsh cleaners.
Our restoration process removes light scratches, wet sands and polishes out moderate damage, and applies a UV-stable protective coating that slows the yellowing and embrittlement cycle.
Mildew, mold and water spotting
In humid South Florida marinas, mildew is the #1 enemy of clear vinyl and acrylic. It anchors into micro-scratches and gets harder to remove the longer it sits. YSR treats active mildew with marine-safe biocides, then restores the surface and seals it with a hydrophobic coating that resists future biological staining.
Corian and solid-surface galley counters
Corian galley counters and head surrounds scratch, dull and stain — but unlike laminates, they can be fully refinished in place. YSR wet sands, polishes and restores Corian to satin or full gloss with no replacement required.
Our process
- 01Surface ID & damage assessment
Identify exact material (Strataglass, Isinglass, cast/extruded acrylic, polycarbonate, Corian) — the correct process depends entirely on this.
- 02Gentle deep clean
Manufacturer-approved cleaners only. No ammonia, no alcohol, no abrasive cloths.
- 03Mildew & contamination treatment
Targeted biocide and stain treatment where required, with full rinse.
- 04Light correction
Hand or machine polishing with plastic-safe compounds for light scratches and hazing.
- 05Wet sanding (heavy damage)
Progressive grit wet sand on heavy scratches in acrylic and polycarbonate — never on Strataglass.
- 06UV / hydrophobic seal
Apply UV protective coating and hydrophobic seal to slow yellowing and resist water spotting.
- 07Care guide handover
Written product list and care instructions for owner and crew so the result lasts.

Frequently asked questions
Most yellowing and hazing can be significantly improved — often to 80–95% of original clarity — but deeply yellowed or crazed panels past a certain point require replacement. We give honest assessments before quoting.
Ammonia in Windex chemically attacks vinyl, causing rapid yellowing and brittleness. Only use IMAR or manufacturer-approved cleaners.
We focus on restoration; for replacement panels we coordinate with our marine canvas and glazing partners.
Yes. We wet sand and polish in place to factory satin or gloss finishes with no tear-out required.
